How old are you?

The last time I lied about my age I was 16 trying to pass for 18. I am happy to be 45. Once when someone said "You don't look 45" (like 45 should be really old and wrinkly) I replied "Yes I do, this is what 45 looks like." That is a Gloria Steinem para phrase :)

I'm 39....40 in August! Trying really hard to avoid that reality....or should I more appropriately say, trying to avoid hitting 40 and feeling the way I do! My goals of new and improved me by birthday time are dwindling (as reality sets in)....trying to learn the lesson of enjoying the ride and being happy with me--as is--rather than trying always to change (I'm wasting too much time worrying!). Here's hoping that greater self-acceptance is part of my b-day gift to me! Seeing all the beautiful, confident, 35+ dancers here is helping! Thanks!!

I turned 40 in Nov. I just cannot and do not see myself as middle aged. Well, sometimes my body feels older, but my mind and spirit feel so much younger.

My Teacher says "I should never grow old". My Teacher is speaking of what is in my mind, which is why how many years I have been on the planet doesn't mean I am growing old, just aquiring wisdom. At least this is what I am trying to learn. ;-)
Strangely enough I do not mind my age, I just sometimes wish I had figured out some things earlier. Then again, don't we all. But like someone just said, I am still a baby. °Ü°

41, 42 in June. I love my age, mainly all the wisdom, self confidence, and self ACCEPTANCE that I've *finally* accomplished. And I know I'm *nowhere* close to being the woman I'm meant to be. It's an incredibly fun journey, though, and I look forward to the next 40 years. :-D

I am 42 with 2 years experience. Once I became the same age as 'the answer' I just couldn't bear to change it. Since folks say I don't look that old I just roll with it.

I just turned 55 - March 20. My boys are both married and been on their own for a long time so I am just enjoying life. I love the bellydance - both tribal and oriental. Most people tell me I don't look my age - I do try to take good care of myself! One day at a time - don't dwell in the past and you don't know what's ahead of you! As long as I can continue to stay young at heart and be healthy, I'll be happy!!!!!

As of today, I am 51 years old and have been a tribal bellydancer for six years.

On my 50th birthday last year, the tribal bellydance troupe I'm a member of performed at Rakkasah for the first time. What a rush!! It was a definite milestone in my life and I look forward to many more experiences like that in the future. :D

Hi all! Just joined this Tribe. I'll be 38 in September. I started dancing almost 4 years ago and started taking martial arts nearly 2 years ago. I'm feeling better and looking better than I did in my 20s! My goal is to get my Black Belt shortly after I turn 40. I don't think I act my age. I dress and act younger. LOL Because I'm so short I can go to my daughter's high school and 'blend' in. There have been many times I've been sitting with a group of kids and get mistaken for one of them. You hear some interesting things that way. ~_^

Turned 40 in February, bellydancing for 5 years, just starting back to playing pick-up hockey with my husband and his friends, no kids, just 2 dogs that we take everywhere. Got my first tattoo at 40, got my belly pierced at 35, now I want my nose pierced!! Looking for another tattoo, soon! People think I look in my late 20's early 30's. I say, you should see my MOM! Thanks Mom for the genes!!!

just about to turn 54. Still loving life. Losing weight and finding that instead of being really grossed out by it that it has become a sorce of intrest to see what my skin is doing. All kinds of reverse wrinkles... like instead of wrinkling in it is wrinkling out if that makes any sense.

My birthcert says that I'm 45 as of last March, but my body and mine is about 35! I really try to not think about my age so sometimes I actuall have to think about it....... I'm still getting carded for beer, especially when I have on a ball cap, sunglasses and shorts. Sometimes they even ask me to take off the glasses! I think this is a complement! I feel pretty good for 45!!! Just lets get rid of these damb HOT FLASHES!!!!!

  • Re: How old are you?

    Fri, July 6, 2007 - 1:13 PM
    I'll be 38 on Halloween.

I've been kind of freaked out about my age for the past few years, especially since many of the dancers I work with are much younger and SO much more experienced -- as dancers, anyway.

I have to keep reminding myself that this form of dance where having LIFE experience means a lot!

This isn't to say that there aren't wonderful younger dancers, but years of living -- and living fully, deeply and richly -- inform our bodies in a manner that, with this dance, creates a unique expression that is more than the sum of an extensive dance vocabulary.

I am 50 take a look at my photos and I think I look pretty good for my age. The girls in my troop that I dance with are 21 and 34 they love to tell everyone that I am 50. And I do not mind. I think they like the shock factor. grin.

  • Re: How old are you?

    Fri, August 3, 2007 - 8:54 AM
I am going to be 55 in Dec.
Sometimes I feel like I am older than that, most times I don't even think about. I will say this...I lived and earned the right to claim each and every year proudly with no reservation.
    Here's some food for thought...
My mother in law was always younger on paper where she worked...Sometimes being honest about how old you are cubby holes you. It isn't right and it isn't fair but it is a fact.
Us "baby boomers" are changing that perception every day.
In the meantime I am 55 this year. Have done the peri menapausal but was unaware of the "term" when I was living it, Have finished Menapause but Have no intention of going into complete "pause" for quite sometime. I was a whole lot smarter at 20, a great deal wiser at 30 and I am not sure but I think I may be almost a grown up now.

This is a totally cool idea for a Tribe! Luv it! I will be 48 in 1.5 months. I've been dancing for 25+ years, and cannot imagine life without it! I've found that each new 'decade' offers something new . . . when I hit my 30's, I stopped listening to family nagging at me to re-marry; they figured at that point I was a waste of their time : )

Since hitting my 40's, I've learned to climb, bought a house, learned to landscape, I stopped caring what others thought, and do things to make me happy. I'd planned on learning to ride a motorcycle when I hit my 50's, but couldn't wait that long, so I taught myself to ride when I was 46 . . . so I'm going to take up skydiving when I hit 50 instead!

I still get carded; I am mistaken for my daughters' sister or friend . . . but I see what others don't see because I'm looking for the droops and the drops, and the bags and the sags, and if I ever get tired of collecting them, I'll do something about it. But I'm quite happy with the current condition of this ol' bod! I've also discovered that after 40, if you fall, things break easier . . . but because of the benefits of the dance, you heal quickly. And although at times I feel like I'm stagnating as a dancer/instructor, I have never been happier with my dancing and what I have to offer! I'm pretty sure it just keeps getting better :-D

You're NEVER going to believe this BUT...last night my husband and I went out for wings and a cold brew and the waitress CARDED US!!!! Both my husband and I are in our fifties!!!

Before you all get excited and think, "damn she must look good" apparently it's the restaurant's new policy to card EVERYONE regardless if they look over 21 or not. Of course, I didn't know that so at first I was flattered, then quickly miffed because frankly making me pull out my ID to make sure I'm old enough to consume an alcoholic brew when I am obviously old enough to be the waitress's mother seemed ridiculous.

But no kidding, at the ripe age of 53, I was carded. Go figure!
    • moRe: How old are you?

      Tue, August 14, 2007 - 12:04 AM
The last time I was carded (at a club where they also card everyone), I raised myself up to my full height -- taller than the youth who asked to see my ID -- and in my most authoritarian voice replied, "These grey hairs should suffice. Furthermore, if you take one look at my face, you'll see that I'm old enough to be your mother. Would you card your own mother, young man?"

He ducked his head, and whispered, "Just don't tell 'em I didn't check your ID, OK?" -- as he let me in the door.

So there IS something to be said for the Dignity of Additional Years, isn't there?
      ;>

Just turned 58, but it didn't bother me much. What is a real bummer is my "baby" is turning 30 this month. Age is a matter of attitude. If you act old, you will be old. My Dad will be 83 and he can out last me. It is pretty bad when you can't keep up with your Dad. His motto is stay busy, so that is what I try to do. As the ash blonde streaks turn to full grey and the eyelids begin to sag making it harder to draw egyptian eye-liner, just be happy who you are. Never forget - the view is always better on the green side of the grass.
  • Re: How old are you?

I think it's funny when people say "Oh, I'm 29 and holding." I'm proud to say that I am 49! I get many comments that I don't look it, etc. And that is nice, but I'm really okay being 49. I've done so much in my 49 years and I have so much more to do. 49 is not old! 50 is not old! Maybe when I turn 75 I might feel a little old then, but I'll still be dancing! My mother is 74 and she is doing great! I think I will be feeling better because I'm a lot more active then she is.

I truly believe that if you think of aging as a negative thing, then you will be old. Old is not just your age, but it is a mentality. Maybe instead of saying "I'm 49 years old" I'm going to start saying "I'm 49 years living". That will turn a few heads! LOL!

OR..".I am living my 49th,55th,60th, (etc) year with the best in front and the pitfalls now identified."

In truth we all feel that somedays we are too old, some days we are not old (grown up) enough and some days we are just happy to be who we are and when we are.

When I was in my late thirites I worried about "how old" I was becoming ( this makes me laugh today) when I finally turned 40 I didn't mind, when I recieved my first "ARP letter" I was set back for a few days Then I realized I would be carded again soon because most people don't see me as the age that I am...so now I am back to showing my I.D. to prove I am "old enough"!( you know the senior discount things) Pretty neat.
When I hit 70 I will be very pleased to have managed not to have killed myself yet....when I hit 80 I will give the rasberries to the 50 year olds...and I will get away with being 100% honest in my opinions ( now there is a freedom I look forward to) I have enjoyed and learned something with each decade. Growing UP through your years is kinda cool.

I think it is really funny about people being carded. A few years ago (more than 10, I was 34 a the time). I was carded trying to buy wine coolers. I laughed at the guy at the counter and thought he was just being cute, but he was dead serious. He made me go out to my car and get my license. I will never forget that. I was obviously over 21 so I don't know what this was about. When I think about it I still laugh.

I think I just topped everyone ----- I'm 63 going on 33 in attitude. Get taken for 50's occassionally - and I think its because I still am fairly thin, wear tight jeans, un'coiffed' hair long & platinum and alot of silver rings etc. I had to learn to go easier and softer on the makeup as I aged --- too much looks like well ---- too much. Been bellydancing for about 4 years, and have always done some form of dance. but jeeeez, sometimes I feel my age, especially when the joints are sore and I ran out of gas sooner than I use dto ----- ha ha. Never let'um see the whites of your eyes !!!

Coming in late ... turning 43 exactly three weeks after Xmas ... and I actually got carded a week ago. It was the first time in about two years but I was carded on a regular basis until I hit 40 ... I do enjoy my age because I have no pretensions, gave them up over ten years ago. And I was really happy to find this tribe!

Someone posted age being a matter of attitude. I think your right. I am slowly getting there.
I just turned 42 and tried to ignore it till my kids pointed it to me. Thats why I love this tribe. Its so uplifting reading everyones experiences. I look at your pics ..and wow.. you guys are beautiful. Hugsss

"Not handleing it well"...LOL...In truth non of us likes to affirm that we have crossed the third decade line...It is our history engrained into us that says, "ole Maid" ( YUCKY THAT). "beyond child bearing years", we are brianwashed into believing that we are the "second string" now....Even though intellectually we have challenged and proven that non of these stereotypes are real, there is a grain left behind burined deep into us that says that that is how the world now percieves us. Not only that we have to admit mortality ...EEE GADS!!!
Well darn it I have discovered that as long as I ignore all that, ask myself how do I feel today...well I feel great, don't put a number on yourself and adopt it as part of your identity. We are not the number of years that we have lived we are the culmination of the many experiences we have loved....and what a beautiful picture full of texture, content, color and expression that is.
Doan wurry 'bout it...Yer beautiful damn it.

I'm 64 this coming June ---- yes a Gemini who refuses to grow up! In the best space of my life -- married my soul mate last year, been belly dancing about 6 years, and mostly retired and doing things I didn't have time for previously. Like learning golf, still riding horses a little, making dance belts, and enjoying life ! I too, am often taken for younger, and I thinks alot is attitude and keeping a youthful style. You go girls!

I'm 57 and have every intention of dancing my way throught the veil to the other side of what is called death.

I have taken lessons on and off since the 70's(mostly off) but this time I have become a dedicated hobbyist.

The dance has helped me recover from a auto accident and has got me "up offa that thing and have danced till I felt better".
  • Re: How old are you?

I thought I had replied already, but guess I didn't. I'm 48 and had my 5th @45 and yep I'm kinda freaking about being 50 with a 5 yr old!

Been dancing off an on since 90, smacking my self in the forehead for learning to slump when posture wasn't cool in 72 cause I had perfect posture until then and now I'm paying for slumping all these years.

At 44 I stopped telling my age cause my spouse is 10 yrs younger and our crowd is around his age and younger and they seemed less likely to want to hang out w/me. If someone asks me specifically I will usually tell if they press at all. It sucks cause I used to be proud of it.

Oh and my favorite phrase is it's not about finishing and looking pristine, its about sliding in w/all the road rash and and bruises that come with living or some such!

Hey, my adult daughter is older than some people here. I am 65 this coming June and started bellydance at age 58.. Despite some arthritic knees, and less stamina than before, I'm fine. I danced other forms before belly dance, but I find that BD is The Best for keeping the carriage and attitude young. I'm just grateful to be seen for being in my 50's much of the time, thank you. I volunteer teach bellydance for exercise at my local Senior Center, and am amazed at how little flexibility some women my age have left and have some other participants in their 80's who give their best shot --- so here's the motto ---- KEEP DANCING TIL' THE END, y'all.!!!

I`m just turned 40 (June 20th) and ageing gracefully. I`ve started to bellydance 7 years ago. I have a marvelous husband and a daughter who will be 4 in August.

Just turned 45. Just started bellydancing last fall and sometimes it's sooo challenging physically and just as much mentally when your the oldest in the class!! I am determined to start again in Sept. with a positive attitude and not beat myself up but enjoy what I CAN do. Enjoy the creativity and be in the moment without judgement.

I'm usually the oldest in any dance class, or at least one of the oldest. I took ballet, jazz et all because my mother was an old hoofer from the 1920's & 1930's. I;m 65 now, and feel am very invested in keeping healhty, happy and looking good with bellydancing, until they have to hoist me onstage with my troupemates.I love the whole community of wonderful women of all ages who do this happy making dance form.I't the healthiest addiction I've ever had. Cheers for all of us,right!
