So maybe someone on this tribe has some experience here.
My hair is starting to get a lot of grey, and I'm getting to the point of switching to a more permanent color than the demis I use now (Not crazy about this, don't want the usual flat color & damage associated with permanents) or going natural (I have mousy salt & pepper, not fabulous silver or skunk striped, so not crazy about that either). When I was a kid, old ladies used to use Mrs. Stewart's bluing- a laundry product- in their hair, which helped cancel out the yellow tones and, if they overdid it, left them with a wholly unnatural blue-violet tint to their hair.
Which was kind of neat. Does anyone here use a colored tint over their grey, and what do you use? Anyone try the bluing? I used to think I could just use a Manic-Panic-type product, but they don't take well on me, they don't make subtle shades, and there's the mess...

Re: Color on grey hair
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 10:28 PMThe bright purple at my temples is just Pravana Chromasilk Vivid demi permanent dye over my own pure silver. :) I like.
I don't have to bleach because nature already did! I'm around 50% silver everywhere else...perhaps a bit more, and have been putting henna in every 4 months or so because it brings back my old auburn and makes the silver look like highlights.
I find Manic Panic never lasts more than a week or so on me, but the Pravana sticks for almost 6 weeks. -

Re: Color on grey hair
Sun, September 13, 2009 - 10:21 PMI'll have to check that out. This weekend I tried something on my roots that I'm really liking, and planning on continuing that as my hair grows in, assuming it lasts fairly well- Clairol Complements demi-permanent, in an equal mix of 3RV (burgundy brown with red-violet base) and Violet Intensifier- it turned out a beautiful aubergine with soft pinkish-grape on the greys. Kind of subtle, but definitely unnatural, in a good way.

Re: Color on grey hair
Tue, September 15, 2009 - 7:47 AMI'm a henna freak, so that's all I use on my hair. It covers gray with an orange tint at first, but over time & repeated hennaing turns dark auburn. I henna about every 6 wks or so. It's a great conditioner as well. I can't imagine putting chemicals right on my scalp!! wow - that really can't be too good for you. -

Re: Color on grey hair
Tue, September 15, 2009 - 10:59 AMYeah, I'm thinking henna is the way to go. The chemical stuff I hate using and it isn't even lasting very long on my gray hairs. I always feel funny rinsing it all down the drain too. All those chemicals going down the drain. -Freya
