Rules to live by?

I can see that now that I'm past 40, I need to take care of myself more consciously. I've been trying to figure out how... do any of you have useful rules for maintaining physical/spiritual/emotional health?

Here's what I've got so far:
- laugh every day
- move my body for an hour a day
- no sugar before 7 pm (hah! still working on that one)
- seek pleasure, avoid stress

Hi Flicka, good question and I like your list. Trying to sensibly take care of the body is a given. To avoid stress, long ago I learned to ask a questions about a situation. The question being..."if I knew I only had a week to live, would I give a sh!t about this?" And, the sh.. word is important as asking the question with feeling. Anyway, it's amazing how few things matter that much. God and family is about it.

Do you mean no sugar before 7am? Or no sugar after 7pm? I like the rules, but I don't completely understand that one! but sometimes I'm a little slow on the uptake and not afraid to admit it either!!! haha!

Re the sugar thing, I noticed this year that the amount I consume is a direct result of the time I start. :)

Saying "No sugar, ever!!!" really does not work for me, I fail. But putting it off until late in the day (like after dinner) is actually working pretty well. I am also trying to learn to like unsweetened coffee with breakfast.

get rid of the negative stuff...like things in the past you can't change, and bad feelings that make you do that scrunchy thing with your forehead. it makes it crinkly, and gives you a grouchy look! i think it kind of goes with what zina said, about asking yourself if it will matter if you only have a week! i don't like rules, but these are pretty good ones to have...especially the laugh every day one!

yeah Kenna, I'm a soda junkie too. Once the sugar is under control, I might take on caffeine. any insights on that one, ladies?

Hi Flicka & others regarding soda...

I was a junkie too - LOVE Mountain Dew. My problem is I have high blood pressure. Soda has a TON of sodium (salt) and my BP was not doing well, even though I was on 2 different medications.

Had major surgery 2 months ago and went off soda. Lost 17 lbs., dropped the BP so significantly that not only did my Doc eliminate 1 of my meds completely, but my other one he cut the dose in half!!

I now have soda only occasionally and only as a special treat.

I am learning to accept the fact that the things I could do when I was younger, including the crap I ate, I can no longer do as I get older. So one of my "rules" (and I really prefer calling them "guidelines") comes from the poem "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann:

"Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth."

In my youth I could eat more crap and still be healthy. I could do things then I cannot do now. We're all getting older and our bodies are changing. We cannot stop that. But we can control what we do to our bodies. Not trying to be preachy at all, just trying to be honest with myself.

But I still love my Mountain Dew, just not as often as I used to...

thanks, what a beautiful and appropriate quote! I'll post it somewhere near the fridge, or maybe in the bedroom? LOL!

My dear friend Sina always says, "It is what it is." I used to always think, "What do you mean by that?" Now I am a Mom with food on my clothes and toys and baby paprphernalia all over and my house,... "is what it is" hehehe
