I am a new member to this tribe. I just turned 58 and have been dancing since my daughter was 18 months old and she turns 30 in 2 weeks. Dance keeps me limber and hopefully thinner than I would be if I didn't dance at all, although the middle fat has been a gathering since I passed menopause.
Is there an age when a bellydancer should hang up her finger cymbals?

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 7:18 PMIs there an age when a bellydancer should hang up her finger cymbals?
--Two weeks after death!!-----( a Morocco paraphrase)--
My dance "mama" is 57. She is more beautiful, in her dancing and just in general, than ever. -
-
Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 7:27 PMMy dance "mama" is 63... and I've been fortunate enough to take lessons from her "mama" (my belly grandma?) who is 73. Both of them can dance me into the ground, literally, and are breathtaking to watch.
I agree with the Morocco paraphrase! Or, to steal another line.... "They can have my zills when they can pry them out of my cold, dead fingers!)
BTW, I'm 42. My daughter, who introduced me to dance, is 25 and my granddaughters who love to dance with us are 5 and 3. Never too old, never too young. -

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 11:16 PMConsidering my age, my teacher would be about the same . . . and I have three generations dancing as well! Another thread on this subject is going on another tribe as well . . . as one person put it: I'll stop dancing when they stop hiring me . . . or when I feel that I have nothing left to 'say' ! -

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 8:37 PMHey I'm turning 40 in 20 days, and I've only been dancing 3 years..... I have no intension of dancing for anything less than 30 years! (cause that might be how long it takes me to learn to do some of the totally cool stuff I see other dancers doing!) -

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 3:51 PMShe should hang up her cymbals when she keeps bangin them on her walker, her droopy tits, or maybe has to design a costume that hides the Depends and corrective bra!
Yeah like Aunt Rocky said---after the daisies are up!!

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 1:33 PMThe only dancing consideration I think is affected by age, is perhaps costuming. Just like a young skinny size 0 with a flat chest does not look great wearing a bedlah designed to display cleavage, there are styles that don't look as attractive on older women. Let's face it - just like polar bears (whose faces get wider as they age), human beings of different ages have different shapes. At age 42 and after 5 kids, my body is not the same shape as at age 20.
I find the tribal style costumes flatter my mature hips and bosum (40F for gods sake :-o because I swear they got bigger with each pregnancy) much better than the cabaret style costumes. Of course, anyone can dance wearing anything they like. :-) -

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 7:14 PMYou are never EVER too old to dance!
But...
The only things that will affect you - and it cannot be prevented - is natural degeneration of the joints. As such, you will probably have to avoid, change, or modify certain moves, but that it clearly not the same thing as not dancing at all.
Also, I agree with Kathryn above - since our bodies are constantly changing, a costume that once looked good on us may not look that way 5, 10, even 20 years later. So we update our costuming choices as necessary, but again it's not the same as not dancing at all.
So keep dancing as long as you can. And if I ever find myself not able to dance anymore, you can bet I'll be in the first row at every show and hafla, zhagareeting (sp?) my heart out!

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 1:45 PMNope. If you can still move, keep on dancing! Last year I saw a 94 year old dance at a local hafla...she had a shoulder shimmy that brought the house down. -

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Thu, November 8, 2007 - 11:37 AMAwwww...this year at that same hafla I was saddened to hear that the 94 year old had passed away. The band played a song for her though, with an empty dance floor so she could still do her solo in spirit. It made me mist up and I swear I could almost see her shimmying her way around that floor. -

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Mon, September 17, 2007 - 7:28 AMAt 61, I'm still dancing! It keeps me from getting stiff lol lol lol . I've seen folks my age, or younger that don't do anything active, and they can barely get around. It keeps us youthful. -

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 7:00 PMMy favorite memory on this subject.
I had taken a class of students to do a benefit performance at an assisted liveng Facility. As is my custom when the "performance" was over we would ask if there were any special visits to make for those who could not out of thier rooms. while going from room to room I noticed an elderly wonam sitting with a walker in front of her trying to get our attention, I walked over and said hello...somewhere into the conversation she gave me this enormous smile and said she could STILL Belly Dance too...She then struggled up into a standing position in her walker and began hip shimmy's...her memory was not as it should be to live unassisted but she obviously remembered and still loved the idea of the Belly Dancing. whenever I question myself I remember that evening and that lovely lady.
I am the one who recieved the best lesson on that occasion...we are only too old when we convince ourselves we are too old. -

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 3:24 PMI'll keep bellydancing until I can no longer stand, and even THEN l'll be there with zills, zagareets and maybe my drum. I'm 63 and started bellydancing at 59. I had done alot of ballet, jazz and disco off and on - and finally got the chance to bellydance! I just started a Flamenco class once a week too. when I see all the photos of us beeeautiful 'older' women, it makes me proud. So what if I can't bend or use my knees like before? and that I sometimes find it hard to remember a choreography -- ( for that I just started taking Ginko biloba) ---- He he. My 42 yr old daughter and my husband are prould of me dancing. I try and encourage other women to start dancing, and I run into alot of low self esteem statements, like "I'm too fat" or " I could never move like that", and so on--- and its really frustrating - but I just keep on trying to spread the joy anyway ------ So when IS too old ---- I say whenever my blood ceases to flow and my breathing stops. Even then, my remaining friends and family can be inspired and remember what an old fireball Marianna was ------ Yeah ! -

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 3:32 PMMarianna- that is a great post! You are inspiring.
I really believe you are only too old to dance when you THINK you are too old.

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 1:32 PMoh h*ll no! There's a really sweet lady that dances with her class here and she has to be well into her 70's. She may not be perfect or slinky any more but she's having so much fun and her face is just filled with joy. She's just plain cute!!
My fanny's gonna be shimmying until it won't any more!

Re: Are you ever too old to dance?
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 4:53 AMI am 48 and have been belly dancing since I was 16. My daughter performs as well. I am going stronger than ever and I agree I have costumed more modestly.
